Tattoo Aftercare

Adhesive “Tegaderm” or “Saniderm” Bandage:

  • Take off adhesive bandage 48 - 72 hours after receiving your tattoo (remove sooner if your skin appears to be red or irritated, or if you know you are sensitive to adhesives)

  • Remove bandage in the shower with your tattoo protected from direct water pressure. Peel bandage off from top to bottom (along the hair grain), peeling close to the skin

  • Once bandage is removed, gently wash with water diluted Dr. Bronner’s unscented soap* and ensure all soap is rinsed completely off

  • Pat tattoo dry with a clean paper towel

  • Let air dry for 10 minutes

  • Apply a thin layer of After-Ink’d vegan lotion** on your tattoo. We do not recommend Aquaphor for healing (especially on handpoke tattoos), this will clog the pores of your skin and actually increases the risk of irritation and will slow healing!

Classic Black Bandage:

  • Take off bandage 4-6 hours after receiving your tattoo (or the next day, if it is a late night session)

  • With clean hands, remove bandage and gently wash your tattoo with water diluted Dr. Bronner’s unscented soap* and ensure all soap is rinsed completely off. Avoid direct water pressure and instead, splash water onto skin.

Then, for all Bandage Types….

  • Wash 1-2 times per day for the next three days with water diluted Dr. Bronner’s unscented soap*, pat dry with paper towels, let air dry for 10 minutes, and apply a thin layer of After-Ink’d vegan lotion**

  • Moisturize as needed with your preferred aftercare lotion for at least two weeks after the tattoo.

  • You may use sunscreen on your tattoo, as well as submerge your tattoo in bodies of water (bath, pool, ocean, etc.) once your tattoo is fully healed (no scabbing, peeling, redness, etc…. usually this is 1-2 weeks).

  • We always recommend using sunscreen indefinitely for tattoos!

*or your preferred gentle, unscented, uncolored antibacterial soap

**or your preferred shea butter, coconut oil, or non-petroleum based lotion
